About Us

Appalachian Headwaters, a nonprofit organization, is a leader in environmental education and reforestation of mined land in central Appalachia.

We operate several environmental education projects including Camp Waldo (an environmental education summer camp for children), the Appalachian Pollinator Center (focused on education related to native habitat and pollinators), and the Appalachian Beekeeping Collective. Headwaters also conducts community science with adults and high school students, hosts college and high school interns, and provides support for Appalachian teachers to teach about ecology and the environment.

Appalachian Headwaters also has projects underway restoring thousands of acres of formerly mined land in West Virginia. Headwaters works with several partners to assure that this land will be restored to native forest and to improve water quality in streams and wetlands. These sites provide recreational opportunities and are open for public use in perpetuity.
