Camp Director
Jonathan Walker-VanKuren
Jonathan has been in the camping industry since 2012 working in residential camps. He started as a bunk counselor instructing drama while obtaining his undergraduate degree. Jonathan then went on to obtain his Master’s Degree from Michigan State University (Go Green!) in Voice Performance and his Artist Diploma in Opera from Texas Christian University. After graduating from MSU, Jonathan worked professionally as an opera singer traveling all around the world singing all while still spending his summers at camp.
He has served in the roles of Bunk Counselor, Area Director, Division Leader, Camp Supervisor and now Camp Director. During the off season, Jonathan still performs throughout the United States and teaches Voice at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA all while planning for the upcoming camp season with Kevin. Jonathan is so excited to join the Camp Waldo family and share his love of camp with our campers, parents, and staff!
Environmental Education Director & Assistant Camp Director
Kevin Johnson
Kevin is an avid outdoor educator drawing from broad experience with youth: from afterschool programs, to yearlong service-learning programming, to multi-day outdoor excursions from the Texas plains to the mountains of our home state. Kevin holds degrees in environmental engineering and history from Rice University and is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Guatemala ’03 – ’05). He is also an educator and beekeeper with the Appalachian Beekeeping Collective. Kevin believes exploration, fun and personal growth are all part of what makes the Camp Waldo experience special.
Head Chef
Al Pettijohn
Al graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and worked at restaurants all over the country. Al has lived in the Greenbrier Valley for more than twenty years, working at restaurants like the French Goat, The Spring, and Thunderbird Tacos. Before moving to West Virginia, Al worked for summer camps in upstate New York for nearly two decades.
